5.10.09 I have noticed how we sometimes get far too involved in the "destination" that we have decided we want to achieve. It's what I call the "I'll be happy when" way of thinking. I'll be happy when I am old enough to drive. I'll be happy when I can get my own place. I'll be happy when I'm married. I'll be happy when I have this house, a family, a car, live in this neighborhood. I'll be happy when I have this job or make this much money. Any of this sound familiar?
I have had the wonderful experience of spending much time around older seniors. An interesting attitude shift is common among most of the seniors I have known. They have dropped the "I'll be happy when" way of looking at things for the "I'm so grateful for" way of thinking. And you know, these people did not achieve all the silly things they had wasted time hoping for in their youth. What they did find out though, was that they didn't need those things to have a happy and fulfilling life experience. And what they did have in their life,
things that they hadn't asked for or dreamed of, were the things they remembered and were most grateful about having experienced.
There is a very definite calm and peace that accompanies the gratitude attitude rather than the "I want" attitude. As we learn to be grateful for the good, however small it may be, we become fit to receive more good. But when the good that we seek is always off in the future somewhere, someday, "I'll be happy then," we miss fully seeing and experiencing the good that is at hand. We are always frantically trying to get, rather than working out from the basis of having.
There is great universal truth in the sayings:
"Take time to stop and smell the roses."
"Live for today."
"Enjoy the journey."
Now is the only time we have. Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow never comes. The joy is in the journey, not the destination.
For some, money seems to be a major obstacle to enjoying life. If that seems to be your situation, you can set yourself free right now by eliminating the money worries. You're not alone. A Google search for the term "online discount benefits" reveals nearly 16 million entries for that term alone! There would not be so many if people weren't looking for ways to make or save money.

Make the decision now to enjoy the journey.
